When writing, we often use organisational markers to make our writing more cohesive, so it all fits

together well.

To do this we can use linking words. We use these linkers for four main purposes:

• To sequence events, often to do with time.

• To add information.

• To contrast with previous information.

• To show a cause and effect.


English Language Activity

Task 1

Look at the following words and add them to the table under the correct heading for how they are used.

First, Therefore, Also, On the other hand, Then, However, So, Meanwhile, Moreover, Later, After that, Hence, Finally, Too, Nevertheless, Consequently, Soon, Furthermore.

See if you can think of some more words.

Task 2

Find a text in a newspaper or other resource. Highlight use of linking words within that text. What does the use of these words do for the text?

Task 3

Find something you have written recently. Highlight any linking words.

Could you have used more linking words?

Could you have used different linking words?

Rewrite your text. (You could choose a more formal or informal style).
