English Language Essentials
Spelling matters! The wrong word can totally change your meaning. Some words sound the same but mean completely different things. Let’s sort them out.
Further Details
Here are some words that love to confuse people:
Their / There / They're
Their = belongs to them: That is their playlist.
There = a place: The best pizza is over there.
They're = they are: They're obsessed with that new show.
Your / You're
Your = belongs to you: Is this your snack, or can I eat it?
You're = you are: You're going to love this movie.
Lose / Loose
Lose = misplace or not win: Don't lose your headphones again!
Loose = not tight: These trainers are too loose—tie them properly!
Two / Too / To
Two = the number: I ate two slices of cake.
Too = also or too much: She laughed too hard at that joke.
To = direction or before a verb: We’re going to the gig.
Where / Wear / Were / We're
Where = a place: Where is my phone?
Wear = clothing: What should I wear to the party?
Were = past tense of are: They were excited for the concert.
We're = we are: We're going to see that new film tonight.
Would Have / Could Have / Should Have
NEVER write would of, should of, or could of. It’s always would have, should have, could have.
Example: I should have checked my spelling before I sent that text!
